Marjorie Alexander Barton

About the foundation

Marjorie Emma Alexander (1916-2003) was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to a family with strong work ethics. In 1934 she married George Arthur Barton, who was one of 20 children born to a New Hampshire farming family. Together Marjorie and George started their own family, raising their children with the same work ethics that had shaped their lives. Sadly, George passed away in 1974.

In 1979 their eldest grandson, Ralph W Johnson II, graduated from high school. Ralph had secured his tuition but was unable to secure room and board for college. Marjorie, who lived close to New Hampshire Technical Institute, offered to let Ralph live with her if he chose that school. Thanks to her kindness and generosity Ralph was able to gain an education in technology that led to a 35 year career as a hospital CIO. During that time Ralph advanced his education, receiving an MS from Northeastern University. Today he holds a position as the VP of Informatics and Technology at The Leapfrog Group, a National Patient Safety organization. Throughout his career he has derived immense satisfaction in using his skills to positively impact the lives of others. The Marjorie Alexander Barton Foundation is a way to “pay it forward” and to honor the woman who made it all possible.
